C&M Training Consultant Delivers “Healthcare Waste Technicians” Course in Serbia

C&M Training’s senior consultant, Craig Chandler has delivered
the first revised Healthcare Waste Technicians (HWT) course as part of an
EU funded Healthcare Waste Management project in the Republic of Serbia.

The original course was developed by Craig Chandler and a German colleague
Jan-Gerd Kueling on the first Technical Assistance project back in 2008.
For the current project the old course was reviewed and totally re-written
by Craig to reflect current EU & Serbian legislation along with current
best practice. The objective of the training is to develop key skills in
nominated staff in order for them to develop safe and efficient systems
for the collection, storage, treatment and disposal of medical waste in
accordance with Serbian requirements and EU directives.

• The training was delivered over 2 days and was split into 8 modules:

1. Introduction to Waste Management
2. The role of the Healthcare Waste Technician (HWT)
3. Classification of Healthcare Waste
4. Healthcare Waste Segregation & Logistics
5. Risks from Healthcare Waste
6. Risk Assessment
7. Sharps Management
8. Introduction to Waste Auditing

• The first course was delivered at the National Institute for Public
Health (NIPH) Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut in Belgrade and was well received
by the trainees.

C&M Training’s lead consultant accepted onto the Occupational Safety & Health Consultants Register

(Mar 2011)

The Government recently accepted the recommendation outlined in the report,
‘Common Sense, Common Safety’ to professionalise health and
safety consultants. The report recommended a qualification requirement that
all consultants should be accredited to professional bodies and a web-based
directory of accredited consultants should be established. The aim of the
register is to help businesses find advice on managing their general health
and safety risks.

The register is only open to those health and safety consultants who have
met certain standards within their professional bodies.

Craig Chandler, C&M Training’s lead consultant has been vetted
and accepted onto the register.

C&M Training Consultant Delivers First “Healthcare Waste Refresher Trainer’s” Course in Serbia

C&M Training’s senior consultant, Craig Chandler has delivered
the first Healthcare Waste Refresher Trainer’s course as part of an
EU funded Healthcare Waste Management project in the Republic of Serbia.

The course was developed and initially delivered by Craig Chandler and
a Serbian colleague Nenad Bosiljcic. The objective of the training was to
train selected staff in the delivery of the new “Healthcare Waste
Refresher” course. The Refresher course was designed to update previously
qualified staff on current best practice with regards to healthcare waste
management & re-qualify them as Healthcare Waste Technicians/Officers
& Managers.

The training was delivered over 2 days and split into 2 modules:
Day 1 covering:

  1. Healthcare Waste Management Legal Update

  2. Healthcare Waste Classification & Segregation

  3. Healthcare Hazardous Waste Update (Chemical Waste)

  4. Healthcare Hazardous Waste Update (Pharmaceutical Waste)

  5. Occupational Safety Update

Day 2 covering:

  1. How People Learn & the Motivation of Learners

  2. Managing Instruction & Question Techniques

  3. Structuring Lessons & the use of Training Aids

The first course was delivered at the National Institute for Public
Health (NIPH) Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut in Belgrade and was well received
by the trainees. The trainees will now deliver the new HCWM Refresher
course to the 1200 healthcare waste staff throughout Serbia.

C&M Training Consultant Assists with Serbian Healthcare Waste Project

C&M Training’s lead consultant, Craig Chandler has been awarded
a long term contract with Euro Health Group (EHG) to provide waste management
& training expertise to their Healthcare Waste Management project
in the Republic of Serbia. The project is funded by the EU and will
be delivered by a Danish consortium including COWI & EHG.

This is the second Serbian Healthcare Waste project Craig has been
involved in.

The overall objective of this project is to develop an effective and
efficient system for the collection, storage, treatment and disposal
of medical waste in accordance with Serbian requirements and EU directives.
This will be achieved by:

  • Supporting the Ministry of Health and Ministry for Environmental
    Protection to harmonise healthcare waste management regulation with
    EU legislation;
  • Drafting a comprehensive management strategy for collection and
    treatment of healthcare waste in accordance with the requirements
    of legislation and the relevant EU- directives;
  • Supporting health facilities in the preparation of waste management
    plans
  • Supporting the effective and efficient implementation of waste disposal
    equipment (autoclaves and shredding machines) within the healthcare
    facilities through capacity building measures;
  • Supporting an information & awareness programme for the professional
    community, on the health, safety & environmental issues relating
    to healthcare wastes.

Chandler has been admitted to the Institute of Training & Occupational
Learning (ITOL) as a Licentiate Fellow.

The Institute of Training and Occupational Learning (ITOL) is an International
Institute and professional body for those specialising in training,
development and occupational learning.

Craig’s membership recognises his skill and experience in the
field of training and demonstrates his commitment to continual professional
development.

C&M Training Assessor Delivers the First SVQ in Waste Management to International Candidate

March 2010

C&M Training’s lead assessor, Craig Chandler has just completed
another first, the delivery and award of an SVQ4 in Waste Management
Operations to a candidate working outside of the UK. The assessment
(for Hazardous Waste Treatment) was completed in the Republic of Serbia
during an EU Funded Healthcare Waste Project.

Delivering a UK vocational qualification aboard is a complicated business
and SQA were involved from the start to provide advice and agree procedures.

The candidate, Victor Hristov (a Macedonian national) was employed
as Waste Technology expert on a 2 year; EU funded Healthcare Waste Project
in Serbia.

The award took over 12 months to complete and involved Craig travelling
to Belgrade to deliver a 2 day training course covering the underpinning
knowledge requirements of the award and again to carry out ‘on-site’;
assessments of Victor at the Healthcare Waste (HCW) Treatment Plant
at the Institute for Public Health (IPH) Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut in
Belgrade.

C&M Training & Albion Environmental Ltd are the first to deliver the new SQA Training Qualification

February 2010

C&M Training in association with Albion Environmental have delivered
Scotland’s first SQA accredited Basic Instructional Techniques
course that incorporates the HN Unit “Planning & Delivering
Learning Sessions to Groups”.

The first course was delivered in the Albion Environmental offices
in York Street, Ayr. The 4 day course is delivered in one block of 3
consecutive days with the final day being the delivery by the delegates
of a 20 minute teaching practice (TP). This is followed at least a week
later by the summative assessment day where the delegates deliver their
final 30 minute TP.

The course was developed and delivered by Craig Chandler (C&M
Training’s senior Trainer) who used the opportunity to pass on
some of his considerable experience in training delivery to the delegates
who were all independently assessed and passed with flying colours.

The course is ideal for in company trainers and leads to a recognised
training qualification issued by SQA.

C&M Training Assessor Celebrates Completion of 100’th Certificate of Technical Competence Candidate

January 2010

C&M Training’s lead assessor, Craig Chandler has just completed
the assessment of his one hundredth level 4 vocational qualification
in Waste Management which leads to a Certificate of Technical Competence.
The award was completed for Jose Cabellero of East Lothian Council.

Commenting on his achievement Craig said “I was somewhat surprised
when I counted up the number of assessments I had completed and realised
I was nearing 100! I have learnt a lot during the process and continue
to develop and improve. I am particularly pleased the 100th candidate
was from East Lothian Council as I know and have worked with many of
their staff”

Craig has delivered COTC assessment for 4 management staff and is currently
assessing some of their operational staff for SVQ level 2 waste management
qualifications.

C&M Training approved by “Qualsafe” to deliver the new HSE Emergency First Aid at Work Qualifications

December 2009

After a recent review of first aid at work, the guidance that the HSE
gives to employers (L74 Approved Code of Practice and Guidance) and
to first aid training providers has changed. Changes include the duration
of the initial First Aid at Work (FAW) course and a new Emergency First
Aid at Work (EFAW) course which must now be accredited by the HSE or
an approved awarding body.

To keep up with these changes, C&M Training has become a “Qualsafe”
approved centre (centre number: 0904154) for the delivery of accredited
first aid qualifications.

Qualsafe Awards is a new awarding body established by one of the UK’s
leading publishers of educational materials to the safety training industry.
They offer accreditation for a wide range of first aid courses.

Construction Candidates Pick up Awards

(July 2006)

2 of Craig’s candidates that have recently completed their SVQ 3 Construction
Site Supervisors award (accredited by the Chartered Institute of Builders
and the Institute of Civil Engineers) have won awards at a recent ceremony
held in Prestwick.

Derek Garlinge of Fenwick based Land Engineering won the award for
best portfolio and Alex Neil a site supervisor from AC Whyte Ltd won
the award for best endeavor. Both candidates received their certificates
and awards from Ayrshire MP Phil Gallie.
